Wilma Inez Young was born June 30, 1936 to the late William R. and Helen I. Avery in Baltimore, MD. Wilma departed this earth on Thursday, February 13th, 2025 at Harbor Hospital, after a lengthy illness, she quietly slipped away into eternal rest. She was 4 of 14 children; 12 siblings proceeded her in death. She was also proceeded in death by her daughter, Brenda Wilson and son Darrell Young.
Wilma received her formal education in Anne Arundel County Public Schools and received her AA at Anne Arundel Community College.
Wilma was a remarkable individual known for her indomitable spirit and unwavering dedication to helping others. She freely gave herself for anyone in need, her doors were always open. She loved her family, she loved her children, and she loved her church.
An enthusiastic cook, Wilma had a gift for bringing people together through food. Her kitchen was often filled with the tantalizing aromas of her favorite dishes, and her friends and family gathered around her table not just to eat but to share laughter, stories and love.
In addition to her passions for helping others and cooking, Wilma had a deep love for poetry. She found solace in the written word and would often present and recite many of her favorite poems at various events. Many of the poems were rich in imagery and sentiment, were also a reflection of her experiences and a testament of her spirit.
In September 13, 1953, Wilma married her true love, David Young Jr. They were a loving couple for 65 years until David's death in April, 2019. From out of that union, 5 beautiful children were born.
She worked for many years at Ense's Spaghetti House where she was the head cook. Wilma also worked for Anne Arundel County Public Schools as a teacher for 31 years. She was the director of the Pumphrey Recreation Center for 12 years. After retirement, God blessed Wilma with the opportunity to become the caregiver of Leona Pierce. Wilma had a true calling and natural ability to educate, mentor and nurture the youth.
Wilma joined Community Baptist Church at the age of 14, under the leadership of Rev. Alfred H. Elliott. She has been a faithful and dedicated member of Community for 74 years. As a teenager, Wilma became the Church Clerk. She also served as an original member of the Pastor's Aide, Missionary Ministry, and Courtesy Guild as well as a Sunday School teacher and the Financial Secretary.
Wilma affectionately known as "Daisy" was grateful for the care that her late husband David entrusted to Michael Cooper. Michael admirably carried out that same dedication until Wilma's last days.
Leaving to rejoice in Wilma's memory, 2 sons, Lawrence Young and Wayne Young; daughter Darlene Young; Son-In-Law, Antonio Wilson; Daughter-In-Law, Inez Young. Sister Barbara Avery-Toler; Brother Larry Avery (Lansing, Michigan); Special/Favorite Niece Marva Walker; 10 grandchildren; 8 great grandchildren; and host of family and friends who will continue to celebrate her life.
