Obituary

Warren Madison Dennis, was a resident of Severn, Maryland. He died on February 2, 2022, at Baltimore Washington Medical Center in Glen Bernie, MD. Warren Madison Dennis was born on August 11,1936 in Philadelphia, PA. He was the youngest of three boys. The three brothers Alfred Dennis (June) John Dennis (Johnny) and Warren all joined different branches of the military upon graduating high school. As young boys and early teens they would spend part of the summers on their grandfather's Hull's farm in Wicomico Maryland. There were many trips as a family taken to NY and Atlantic city. It was also a Sunday tradition to drive to Burlington, NJ visiting relatives on Sundays to eat cousin Murty's cooking. He loved to read as a child and would give books to his children as gifts. He also enjoyed playing tennis. His parents instilled in him a good work ethic.

Warren was introduced to the Lord and Baptized as a young child. He and the family attended Wayland Baptist Church on 25th and Columbia Ave. in Philadelphia. In Maryland he attended the Severn United Methodist Church.

He is preceded in death by his Parents Anna Hull-Dennis Murray, George Dennis along with his blessed and bonus father Johnny Murray; his brothers Alfred, John and his son Derrick Dennis.

Raised throughout North Philadelphia, in a traditional manner where house roles were males' roles. He was known to say he was old fashion or back in my day…. He preferred ladies in dresses, and no curlers in the street. He was a proper man or could be quite the chauvinist.

Throughout these formative years Warren's education was in the Philadelphia school system. He attended Fitz Simon Jr High, Simon Gratz and Central High School graduating in 1954. After graduating, he started his Military career in the Army. After Boot Camp he was stationed in California and later at Fort Bragg where he was a member of the 82nd Airborne Division, moto ALL THE WAY.

In 1955 he married his first wife, buddy Frances Lyles. From this union they were blessed with 3 children Wanda, Derrick, and Joanna. The family resided at Fort Bragg, NC. At Fort Bragg he was a parachuter both jumping and instructing others to parachute. He would go out and jump for the fun of it. He would jump out of helicopters after his work day and a couple hours on weekend. While in the military he traveled the world serving in such conflicts as Japan, Korea, Germany, and the Vietnam war.

However, participating in the conflict in the Dominican Republic he lost fellow soldiers, and friends which changed his perspective about war, and the preservation of life. Shortly after The Dominican conflict he entered officer candidate school. At that point he was sent on temporary duty assignment (TDY) to Fort Campbell in Ky to instruct soldiers (parachuters) in survival techniques. He loved the thrill of parachuting and instructing but could not take the deaths of young soldiers on his shoulders. After returning from TDY he decided not to pursue officers training, and returned to Philadelphia.

Upon returning to Philadelphia Warren accepted a position and became the first black assistant buyer at Lit Brothers Department store. He was also employed at Woodward & Lothrop in Washington, DC, he then became a sales representative for CPS industry (American Greeting Cards) winning trips. He also worked for the Federal Government at the following agencies: IRS, Social Security Office and Office of Personal Management where he retired in 1996.

He met and married Cecilia E. Davis in 1974. They were blessed with 1 daughter Nichole N. Dennis. The family resided in varies areas of Maryland raising their daughter in Columbia and Severn Maryland.

Arthritic knees and back, or as he would say Arthur prevented him from taking walks, but he kept talking. Warren loved to talk on the phone finding time to speak with his cousins and friends whether around the corner or in Philadelphia, Milwaukee, Indiana, or New jersey.

Warren is survived by his wife Cecilia Davis Dennis, of 47 years. He also leaves his 3 girls Wanda T. Dennis (William Goodmond), Joanna A. Dennis, (Darryl Jones), Nichole N. Dennis, Mellisa Gopie (bonus daughter), Ricardo A. Jones (godson), Annette Norton (sister-in-law), Ricarddo R.
