Obituary

Mrs. Vivian D. Hall gently departed this life on May 7, 2020, while surrounded by her loving family. She was 99 years and six months.

Born, Vivian E. Dotson on August 1, 1920, she was the eldest daughter of Matoaka and William C. Dotson. She was preceded in death by her husband of 43 years, Mr. Isadore Hall.

Vivian and Isadore were united in Holy Matrimony on September 19, 1943.  God put it on their spirt to open their hearts and home to two beautiful daughters, Elizabeth (Betty) and Brenda. Committed to family, the couple cared for and nurtured, along with their daughters, several nieces and nephews.  Their home was always a place where you were taught to be honest, wise, loving, kind, good-mannered and appreciative of all blessings.

Vivian was a faithful member of John Wesley United Methodist Church, Glen Burnie, where she was christened as an infant. She received early training, attended Sunday school and youth fellowship.  A Godly woman, she continued to serve the Lord and remained an active member of the Church throughout her life. Vivian was well read in the study of the Bible and the study of the Ministry. Her faith defined her, and her spiritual devotion was apparent to everyone she met.  She carried with her a strong Christian belief in God the Father, Jesus the Lord and Savior, and the Holy Spirit. She used this faith as a guide and counselor on life's journey.

An educated woman, at the age of 43, Vivian received her Master's Degree in Biology from Coppin State University.  A huge feat for a black woman in 1963!  She used this education to teach in Baltimore City Public Schools for 15 years before returning home to assist her husband in their family business.

Vivian loved to travel. Her and Isadore traveled all over the world.  She captured her travels through her collection of pictures albums.  Her collection was so extensive that her extended family would come to visit just to see the photos. Once Isadore passed, Vivian stayed close to home but still enjoyed brief vacations with her daughter and grandchildren.

Vivian appreciated life and loved beautiful things.  Spring was one of her favorite times of year, as she loved having fresh flower on display both inside and outside of her home.  Gardening was one of her favorite Spring/Summer past-times and anyone traveling Furance Branch Road would likely see her watering her flowers or sitting in her swing enjoying the sunshine.

Vivian loved playing board and card games. Almost daily, she would conjure up a game with someone.  Scrabble was her favorite and her sister, Sylvia, was her favorite opponent.  These games kept her sharp throughout her life and even in her late 90s, she could "beat the pants off" even the most skilled players.  Her competitive nature became a family joke, as in her later years she was known to drop a letter or mistakenly take too many cards.  Loving her spirit, her opponent would simply smile and let her win!

Vivian was the family matriarch and witnessed an entire century of change. She was a proud, independent woman and lived alone until she was 98.  Vivian was blessed to have a loving support system to assist her in her later years.  In November 2018 she moved in with her daughter, granddaughter, and great granddaughter. Vivian was able spend the remainder of her life comfortable, well cared for and surrounded by love and multiple generations of her family.

Vivian is survived by her daughters:  Betty and Brenda (Melvin); 2 sisters – Sylvia and Jeannie; 6 loving grandchildren: Tonya (Todd), James, Kirk (Kim), Karen, Leslie (Ron), Melvin Jr.  (Michelle); 9 great-grands: Jessica (Kevin), Todd Jr., James III, Tyler, Michael, Jared, Colin, Lauren, Alexis; 1 great-great grand – Aliyah and a host of nieces and nephews.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her three brothers, Gerald, Everett and Norris and her devoted Son-in- Law, James (Bo).

In lieu of flowers the family request donations be made to the Maryland Food Bank.
