IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Leroy
Johnson
January 10, 1926 – December 30, 2014
Leroy Johnson, beloved husband of Mattie Johnson for 65 years, transitioned this life on December 30, 2014. He was born on January 10, 1926 in Decatur, Georgia to the late Isabel Barney and Henry Johnson.
Leroy was a man of faith and a man of action. He greatly enjoyed giving back and helping others. Leroy was a United States Army veteran; he served his country during World War II between 1944-1946 as a Corporal. He was a hardworking man who devoted himself to providing for his family and the people of his community. He worked as a Foreman in the Forestry Division for the City of Baltimore for 30 years until he retired in 1992. His co-workers fondly called him "Big Daddy". During his spare time he enjoyed fishing, crabbing and playing horseshoes and cards. Most of all, he loved gardening because that was a hobby he shared with his wife.
He served as a member of the Knights of Columbus, Holy Name Society, and volunteered at the Saint Vincent De Paul Outreach Center and Food Pantry. These organizations, like Leroy, are dedicated to helping those in need. Leroy was also an active member of the congregation at Saint Veronica Catholic Church located in the Cherry Hill community. He assisted his wife in managing the Saint Veronica's Catholic Church Thrift Shop and food pantry between 1968 and 2011. He was active in just more than the church; the neighborhood children affectionately referred to him as "Daddy" because he was such a pillar in the community.
Leroy was blessed with a large and loving family. Preceding him in death are his parents; daughter, Roberta Alexander; grandson, Lionell Johnson and great granddaughter Tamia Washington. He leaves behind to cherish his memories, his loving and devoted wife, Mattie Johnson; 8 children William, Gracye, Leroy, Marty, Cynthia, Teresa, Jewel and Everette; 14 grandchildren; 30 great grandchildren; 2 great-great grandchildren and a host of other family members and friends.
