Ernest Henry Barnes was born January 16, 1931 in Baltimore,
Maryland. He was the son of the late William and Myrtle Wheatly Barnes. His life ended on Saturday, August 8, 2015.
Ernest was educated in the Baltimore City School System and graduated from Carver Vocational High School in 1950. Several months later he enlisted in the U. S. Army and was honorably discharged in 1953.
His professional career began when he was appointed to the Baltimore City Fire Department on October 21, 1953. He began work on December 11, 1953 at Engine Company No. 10 located in Fairfield, Maryland. Ernest was among the first 10 African Americans appointed to the Baltimore City Fire Department. He retired in 1986 after 33 years of service.
On June 11, 1955 Ernest Barnes and Doretha Middleton were united in marriage. They celebrated their 60 th wedding anniversary this year. From this union Jacqueline Elizabeth was born.
Ernest accepted Jehovah as his spiritual guide in 1970. He was constantly reading the bible and quoting scriptures. He was a deep and thoughtful thinker and enjoyed travelling and classical music.
Four brothers preceded him in death, Edward, Robert, William (Butch) and Leroy Barnes.
Ernest Henry Barnes leaves to cherish with fond memories of him his wife, Doretha and one daughter Jacqueline Elizabeth. In 1995 Ernest was blessed with two special grandchildren, Keisha and Teisha Miles who he greatly loved and gave him a new and rewarding perspective view of life. Cherishing his memory are two brothers, Amos and Albert. Two sisters-in-law, Alice Geraldine Barnes and Irene Middleton, two brothers-in-law, Richard and Frederick Middleton all will sorely miss him. His many, many nieces, nephews and cousins will always hold fond memories of him.
